After several weeks of investigation, Ross Township police have charged a 20-year-old driver from Cheswick who they said was involved in a New Year's day chase and crash.

Investigators said the crash nearly killed a several teenage passengers.

"It was pretty bad. We didn't think he was going to make it," said Nancy Bishop.

Bishop said her son, 17-year-old Ryan, was in the car during the chase and crash.

Police said Ryan Bishop and two of his friends went along for a ride at 3 a.m. when Vincent Thompson, 20, was driving under the influence.

A police chase began when investigators said they tried to stop Thompson, who was driving erratically on Babcock Boulevard. Officers said as they turned on their sirens and lights, Thompson tried fleeing.

Investigators said Thompson was veering into oncoming traffic and traveled at speeds approaching 100 mph.

At one point, nine different police departments were involved in the chase, reported Channel 11's Renee Kaminski.

Police said Thompson eventually crashed into a stone wall off of Butler Street, 10 miles from where the pursuit began.

Bishop and the two other passengers spent several weeks in the hospital, but are all now recovering at home.

Thompson faces 35 charges, including DUI. Police said this is Thompson's second DUI charge.
